Challenge or chore

This month, I’m taking a challenge created by one of my friends, to log 50km in a month.

I just agreed to it without thinking as a result, and find halfway that it’s very hard to accomplish. Then I find it more as a chore because I hate to not complete it, while it’s too much stretch for me to complete it.

Later I do my math, that in average, I ran short 1-2km mid week and 5km on weekend, so if I run for 4 weeks, I will end up with 24-28km. In which usually I’m only able to run for 3 weeks, which is 18-21km.

So it’s like double the distance of my usual run.

After first week passed, I found out that I need to run 3.2km two times during weekdays and 10km on weekend to complete this challenge.

And to be honest, on 2 runs over the weekend, I kept asking myself why I’m doing this. With angst.

First of all, it gives me additional unnecessary stress. Second, although it’s a group challenge which was supposed to feel motivated, I felt the opposite.

After asking myself so many times during the run, I came into conclusion about my unhappiness doing this. Since I hate not to complete a mission, might as well as I pay attention to this, and go through it. Perhaps I’ll learn one or two things.

1. People do a challenge because of wanting to kickstart a change in which, I’m actually happy with my routine. Yes it falls short compared to my past routine, but I feel this is what I can do, while keeping others balance.

2. Using other people standard to apply it to yourself when you don’t feel you don’t need it, is just giving me extra stress.

3. Learning from Tsum-tsum game (yes, I play it again recently because the app I’m using for reading manga kept crashing in my iPad, so I just play it again to fill time) that a mission is meant to make you continue doing it. So if doing the mission and makes you crash after that, or even makes me hating it, then the mission is not for you.

So, my mission in wellness this year are

  1. Meet my daily goals 8k steps
  1. Beat my previous record streak 168 days
  2. Sleep more, eat well
  3. Do one run mid week and long run during weekend
  4. Learn to let things go for your own peace and sanity

I’m currently down to my last 4km of the month, while my friends are completed it a week before me.
